Virginia squirrel season is now in. I kid you not. It’s hot, it’s June, but there is now a summer season for hunting squirrels in Virginia.
The ticks must be loving this – all that fresh meat free for the taking.
Several years ago, the biologists at DWR decided that since there were no female squirrels carrying babies at this time, June would be a good time to get everybody up and at ‘em and go squirrel hunting.
Frankly, I’d rather be fishing or playing golf, but there are apparently a few squirrel hunters out and about. I wish they’d come to my back yard. They would get their limits in no time.
The spring/summer squirrel season runs from June 5 through June 19th, so you’ve still got a few days. You can legally harvest 6 squirrels a day, but it’s important to dress the animals quickly once their body temperatures drop and begin to rise again. There are certainly plenty of squirrels and plenty of places to hunt them, and I’m sure the ticks will welcome squirrel hunters with open appendages.
