Recently, I have noticed that I am talking to myself more frequently – out loud.
The conversation often starts out as, “Why are you in this room? I know you came here for a reason.”
“Oh! To find my glasses, that’s why,” might be the response. So, throughout the day when I’m alone, I’ll talk to myself and have a spirited conversation.
The trouble is, my hearing is not what it once was, so when I talk to myself, I must speak up a little to be heard. This can be a problem.
I was in Kroger’s the other day and blurted out, “You dummy. You forgot the peanut butter and it’s clear on the other side of the store.”
At that point, a lady behind me said, “I beg your pardon. I don’t need peanut butter. I have a peanut allergy.”
Not wanting to tell her that I was talking to myself, fearful she would call security, I told her that I was an amateur ventriloquist and was practicing for my next performance.
“You certainly need more practice,” she said, and huffed off.
I either have to stop talking to myself in public places, or maybe carry a little dummy with me when I go to Kroger’s.
