Saltwater angling along the mid-Atlantic coast is peaking. Lots of cobias are being sighted along the oceanfront and in the lower bay. Red and black drum numbers are very good throughout the lower bay. Anglers have had a lot of success with reds on the shoals near Smith Island. Black drum are also feeding near the Eastern shore, both seaside and bayside. Another good location is near the islands of the CBBT. Croakers Slow to Show
The prime time for the croaker bite in the bay and up in to the tidal rivers is mid-May. But this year, it’s not happening, at least to any degree. The numbers just aren’t there – yet. Maybe soon. Striper Time at Anna
Stan Cobb at Greentop says the stripers at Anna have been on fire. Guide Jim Hemby is reporting using up 250 baits in several hours. The stripers are also biting well at Kerr, as they are still performing their spawning rituals. The bass in Kerr, Anna, and Gaston are in post spawn mode for the most part. Cobia Hit Nags Head
They arrived about a week ago – in force. Cobia are all over the OBX beaches and headed our way. “We landed 16 cobia last Friday afternoon,” said Capt. Big Crappie Showing Up
Stan Cobb at Greentop reports that crappie fishing has been very good this week. Numerous 2-plus pound fish have been weighed in at Sturgeon Creek Marina at Lake Anna. At Nags Head, there were good catches of bluefish on the piers on Wednesday and they were biting all day. Angler, Justin Wase, said there were over 200 caught in less than 2 hours at OBX Pier and he caught 30. The same for all the piers.
