By Daryl Daughtrey, PGA Professional An old golf guru once told me that when your shots start going everywhere, other than where you want them to go, head to the practice tee and start subtracting. Subtract everything you have read about the golf swing, what you’ve been told or learned about the golf swing. What this guru meant was that a golfer must get back to the basics. As … [Read more...]
Golf Course Ecology
Is a golf course good or bad, environmentally speaking? Many think it’s bad, using precious water resources and occupying prime real estate while appealing only to a select few. Wouldn’t the plant and animal life, and society in general, fare better with all those acres of land used in a different manner? Not necessarily. A golf course, in fact, offers more in the way of plant and animal value … [Read more...]

Meadowcreek – Just For Fun
Most larger cities have a municipal golf course or two, but few have one to rival the quality of Meadowcreek Golf Course here in Charlottesville. My golf amigos and I teed it up there last week and had a great round. The best part? We played in less than 3 ½ hours – didn’t have to wait a single minute for any dawdling foursomes ahead – and that’s been a real problem of late. Golf courses are … [Read more...]
A Royal (Virginian) Experience
I have 3 regular golfing buddies. You wouldn’t want to know what we call ourselves. It’s not very flattering. To give you an idea, the second of the two descriptive words is “holes.” But we enjoy playing together and giving each other a hard time – which is what golf, to me, is really all about. Last week, my fellow hole-mates and I decided to revisit the Royal Virginian Golf Course in Louisa. … [Read more...]
Golf: A Waiting Game
Not all golf experiences are good, and that doesn’t mean just a bad day swinging the club and recording a high score. We have plenty of those and can still have a good time on the links. But when the golf traffic is backed up bumper-to-bumper, I find it impossible to enjoy my round, even if I’m scoring well. Last week three of us decided to play Old Trail in Crozet. We were a little … [Read more...]
A Round at Greene Hills
Played Greene Hills lately? What a wonderful course with lush fairways, pristine greens and a challenging but fun layout. Kevin Mann and I teed it up last week and had a great round in spite of a pouring rain on the last 4 holes (during which I made an eagle 2, by the way). The Greene Hills Club in Stanardsville is one of Central Virginia’s best-kept secrets, unmatched in the beauty of the … [Read more...]
Golf Is A Cruel Game
Golf is a cruel game. For example: How can anyone four-putt from 20 feet? It’s possible. I’ve done it several times. And then I think back to that greenside bunker shot that went all of 24 inches on the first swing, then 24 yards on the second blast, clear across the green into another trap. Cruel? Consider the time you whiffed on a drive attempt with two other foursomes watching and waiting … [Read more...]
Tanyard Ready for Action
Our foursome was trying to figure out which course to play in order to take advantage of a beautiful day this week and Tanyard Country Club in Louisa won out. It was a great choice. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Tanyard in such good condition. Like most courses this time of year, the greens were being aerated, but they were in great shape grass-wise. The fairways were filling in nicely and the … [Read more...]
Old Golf Jokes
Bud, an avid golfer, sets off on a round-the-world trip in his new boat, but winds up veering off course and gets lost. He drifts onto a deserted island, where he is stranded, all alone. Months go by and there's no sign of rescue, and not even a soccer ball to keep him company. Then one day Bud sees a beautiful mermaid coming out of the surf, heading straight toward him. The mermaid stops … [Read more...]
