I had a UFO in my yard this week, but instead of a little green man, it was a strange gray bird like I’ve never before seen,
Nancy saw it and called me to the kitchen window.
“What kind of bird is that?” she remarked. The bird was perched near our feeders, but not feeding. It appeared more curious than anything else.
It was a gray bird, a lighter gray and a little mottled in the chest, but there were no distinguishing markings except for some dark streaks on its back and wings. It was a little larger than a sparrow, a fairly chunky little bird with a medium length tail and a light colored bill. I saw the singe bird for two days straight, then the next day I saw a pair of these friendly birds. We were able to get within 6 feet of one for a picture.
The birds have beaks sort of like grosbeaks and they don’t hop, like sparrows, they walk almost like a dove. They have remained under the feeder with sunflower hearts, which says they are likely fruit and insect eaters.
I pored through my bird book, Birds of Virginia, and there is nothing remotely like like these little gray birds – genuine UFO’s
Any ideas out there? I’d love to hear about them.
