I don’t know about you, but I usually think about the bald places in my lawn in the spring, when the lawn starts to green up. So I plant grass in the spring, which is often a waste. The time to plant grass is right now, when it’s cool weather, but still some sun. Boy did I luck out a few weeks ago.
Last spring, I had planted some grass seed near my backyard fire pit (where I had incinerated any and all nearby grasses). The new seed did great, at first. Then the stifling heat and a few weeks in a row without rain left my newly sewn patches looking like a wasteland out of a T.S. Eliot novel. But recently I heard it was going to be some rain coming – and were they ever right – so I bought some Scotts Turf Builder seed at Lowe’s, spread it over the previously reseeded areas and on some additional bare spots and waited for the rain. The rain came and came and came some more. I was worried that my planting efforts may have been washed away, but yesterday, when I was mowing for hopefully the last time, I paused to admire my beautiful stand of new grass. Now that it has an established root system, it will be ready to take off next spring and then be able to withstand the brutal summer.
So, fellow backyard gardening buffs, hit the stores this weekend – don’t wait ant longer – and scatter some quality grass seeds in your bare patches. You’ll have much better success than if you wait till spring.
