When I’m at home, I spend as much time as I can at the kitchen window checking on my birds. It is always a great joy to see special visitors. They were there this morning, a flock of Cedar Waxwings, stopping by for a drink of water from our bird bath.
They flew down, then back up into the tree. They did this five or six times. One bird landed on a limb just outside our kitchen window. What a beautiful creature.
Cedar Waxwings are elegant birds with sleek grayish-brown wings, a light-yellow belly and a bandit-like mask. The tip of their tails is also a bright yellow and the tip of their wings appear to have been dipped in wax.
Unfortunately, I have very little in my yard for them to eat this time of year. A few months back, a flock (probably the same group) flew in and searched one of my holly bushes for berries and none were there. I hope to plant something called Winterberry this spring that will provide food should they stop by again.
Cedar Waxwings will eat insects during summer, but they prefer the small blueberry-like cones of cedar trees. Food or not, all birds are attracted to water, so if you want special visitors, offer them a bit to drink.
