No. Not that kind of “grass”. Real grass, like comes on a lawn – or did before last summer’s smoking hot heat and lack of rainfall. Grass on almost every lawn now has brown patches and scads wire grass, which doesn’t mind drought conditions or intense heat.
Driving through our neighborhood, lawns look like war zones – except for lawns that have zoysia grass. They look just fine because zoysia tolerates both heat and drought.
Several years ago, I picked up a few chunks of sod that my neighbor was throwing away as she edged her curbside. I had a hole where a dogwood tree once lived and put the sod there to fill the hole. The sod was zoysia which spreads quickly and has now taken over 90% of my front yard. By the end of next summer, my yard should be 100% beautiful no matter the weather,
More and more, zoysia is being used on golf courses because it needs very little fertilizer and it stands up to harsh, summer conditions. Zoysia, though, is far more expensive than regular grass seed, so there is a steep start-up cost, but it’s worth it. You can buy 3-inch plugs of Zosia sod and if you space them several feet apart on your existing lawn, the zoysia will take over the entire lawn within a year or two.
Zoysia- it’s a smoking hot value.
