My backyard nest of bluebirds has fledged – four beautiful gray and blue chicks. They are all healthy and flying well, but have become worse beggars than the fellows who hold up cardboard signs along Rt. 29 North, saying something like this: “I once knew a fellow who was veteran. Personally, I am on drugs, but if you give me a few bucks, I promise I will buy fresh spinach.”
My bluebirds don’t beg for money, they want mealworms and I am now into my second batch of 5,000. I have found an excellent source for live mealworms, by the way, and want to share my experience.
I bought my first batch on-line, from the first name that popped up. They were about $50 for 5,000, but if they sent me 5,000, it was barely that many. They didn’t confirm shipment and 6 days passed, so I went to the pet shop and bought a thousand to tide me over. Finally, the mealworms arrived. They were in a small box, which had an odor to it. The worms were all right, they were all alive, but I was not happy. When I found out my bluebirds had hatched, I ordered another 5,000, this time from a company called Fluker Farms out of Louisiana. I was impressed.
First, the worms arrived the third day after I ordered them and they were packed in a solid box with vents on the side – like a cricket cage or box.
The worms were fat and healthy and I bet there were 10,000, not 5,000 worms in that box – at least twice as many as before. I have been giving my bluebird family hands full at a time and still have a ton of mealies left over.
My bluebirds have already selected the new bluebird house I recently erected and it won’t be long until the hen is sitting on the nest again. I will probably need at least one more batch of 5,000 mealworms, but from now on, I will order only from Fluker Farms.
They ship the same day on any orders received before 3 pm and they guarantee live deliveries. The farm also sells crickets (their specialty) as well as super worms, fly larva and giant mealworms. They have both medium and large mealworms. I ordered the medium size, about ¾-inch, which are perfect for bluebirds. The cost was about $50, which included Priority Mail.
If you’d like some really nice mealworms with super quick delivery, the address is Fluker Farms, 1333 Plantation, LA 70767. The web address is Flukerfarms.com
