Currently, I am providing mealworms for two bird families. My old friends, the bluebird couple from last year, have reclaimed their bluebird house on the fence. The eggs have been laid and the hen is on the nest. There is also a pair of cardinals that got in on the mealworm action last summer. They know my habits and me personally and when I go out to drop a handful of mealies in the bluebird food bowl, they come begging, too.
So I’ll need a bunch of mealworms this year and I just ordered 10,000 from Fluker Farms.
I discovered this company last year and they are far and away the best source of mealworms I have ever used. If you order before noon, they will ship that day and it’s on your door stop the next day, Rather than languishing in a hot mail room at some post office or UPS warehouse, it’s one day service to Virginia. That means your mealies are healthier and fresher.
They also ship in special cartons where the worms are separated and kept in various layers, rather than stacked one upon another.
It’s been chilly so far this spring and there hasn’t been an abundance of active insects, so I figured I’d help my little blue – and now red – friends with some take-out food, three times a day.
