A few weeks back, Nancy and I saw a mother rabbit building her nest against our backyard fence. Nancy checked the nest daily, and Voilà! One day they were there. Four, tiny baby bunnies. They stayed on or near the nest – with regular visits from Mom – for about a week, then left. Well, all but one left. One of the little fellows decided he liked our back yard just fine. No cats, no dogs and his own private bean patch.
This spring I planted two short rows of green beans and they were doing extremely well, in spite of the heat and lack of rain. Then the bunny discovered the two rows. One leaf by one leaf, nibble-by-nibble, stalk-by-stalk, the little rabbit has made short work of my bean patch.
But you know what? I feed mealworms and sunflower hearts to the birds? Why not give the little rabbit a meal as well.
He’s a cute little fellow and not at all concerned when I come near. He looks up at me, as if to say thanks, and continues to eat my green beans.
It’s early yet. I think I’ll plant some more.
