Good job, guys. Yet I saw Mr. Bluebird poking in and out of one of my three houses this week. He’s already looking. I suppose all birds keep an eye out for potential nesting sites, but since bluebirds are most visible, I Frequently see them shopping around for nests throughout the year. One reason, I suppose, is that for the past 30 or 40 years, nesting sites were drying up as invasive sparrows and starlings took over. In the past 10 years, tens of thousands of bluebird houses have been added to the inventory and the pressure is off. But if you’re a bluebird, you never know. They used to advise that your take down a bluebird house when they finished nesting and to store it for safe keeping over the winter, then put it back up in spring. I disagree. I think you should leave multiple houses up all year because by spring, the pair will have finalized their real estate plans. If the old house wears out, get a new one, and I think I’ll get several.
