Not only do they flock together, they feed together. All of them. At the same time.
My passion is watching birds, sometimes from the kitchen window and sometimes from my vantage point in a lawn chair in the back yard. One thing I have noticed is that all the birds seem to feed at the same time. You’ll see bunches of birds – cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, finches, and the like, then they will all be gone.
Poof!
It’s like one of the birds says, “Okay, guys. We’re outta here. Meet’ya back in an hour and a half.” And that’s what happens. You would think there would be a steady flow of birds to the feeders, but it’s not. They come, leave for a spell, then return, as if on cue.
My Daddy once said that if you see sparrows out in the fields feeding, the quail will be feeding, too. And he was right.
I don’t know if it’s the barometric pressure, the phases of the moon or something only birds understand, but they either feed in mass, or not at all.
Go figure.
