We were on hole 16 at the Spring Creek Golf Course when I stopped to admire a beautiful water garden in someone’s back yard. There was a series of pools cascading down the hill, bordered by rocks and adorned with flowers. There was a small American flag at the bottom. While I was observing, a male bluebird flew down and landed on the tip-top of the flag. What grace, I thought, and how amazing that a bird could land and perch on such a small landing strip. The bluebird lingered for a minute, his little orange chest thrust forward as if he knew he was on an American flag and proud to be there.
Not all in this country are proud of our flag and many show it disrespect.
My guess is that none of them ever saw that same American flag being draped over their father’s casket in Arlington National Cemetery. I did and I am proud of that flag and of all that it stands for. Too bad we don’t have more bluebirds in America.
