I got a bird store for Christmas. Well, not an actual store, but all its inventory. Somewhere out there, there is a bird/pet store with empty shelves.
But that’s not a bad thing. Bird seed and birds feeding accessories are among my favorite gifts to receive and all my family is well aware. Safflower seed never goes out of style and a bag of cracked corn fits one and all. I got enough suet this Christmas to fatten up every bird in Virginia and several of my suet packs will keep the squirrels at bay. These were suet cakes with hot popper, which the rodents hate and the birds adore. I can now put one of these in my wooden suet feeder that attracts woodpeckers and nuthatches because it is upside down. In past years, the squirrels gnawed through the wood to get at the suet – but not anymore
I also got some big cylinders of seeds stuck together by honey which the birds can get to through the wire cage, but not the squirrels.
Other bird store items in my massive stocking include black oil sunflower seed, safflower seed (for the cardinals), blended finch seed (for my ground feeding birds), a bag of ear corn (for the squirrels and crows), hummingbird nectar holders (for your hands in order to hand feed) and many other avian delights.
As my family knows, I enjoy feeding the birds and I enjoy having them around. Bird seed is a small price to pay for all that natural beauty.
