I enjoy going grocery shopping. I like to poke around and see what looks good, what motivates me to cook a particular dish and I especially like to run across good deals. But recently, my trips to the grocery store have stimulated more than a few “Grrrs”. They are starting to tick me off. One of the biggest gripes I now have is that with all the people calling in their orders, the aisles … [Read more...]
A Happy Mother’s Day
By Nancy Brewer I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed Mother’s Day this year and to thank my husband publicly. My husband, Jim, pays attention when I drop hints for birthdays and Christmas. Mother’s Day was no exception, thank goodness. I love to work in our yard, it’s great exercise and therapy for the soul. The outcome is a real gift for us. Because we have so many mature … [Read more...]
Free Fishing Days In Virginia
If you think you might enjoy fishing, but have never had the chance, it won’t cost a dime in. license fees if you go fishing anywhere in Virginia on June 7th, 8th or 9th. Snakes on The Water
Northern Water Snake (nonvenomous). Photo credit: J.D. Willson By J.D. Kleopfer, Herpetologist, VCDGIF Spring is here and the fishing is heating up. It’s also that time of the year when lots of other critters are heating up and becoming active. Among these critters are water snakes and cottonmouths (aka “water moccasins”). Here are some helpful tips on identification and behavior … [Read more...]
Croakers Slow to Show
The prime time for the croaker bite in the bay and up in to the tidal rivers is mid-May. But this year, it’s not happening, at least to any degree. The numbers just aren’t there – yet. Maybe soon. Elsewhere in Virginia waters, the black sea bass season reopened May 15th and runs through the 31st. The bite has been very good with several boats catching limits of jumbos. The Triangle … [Read more...]
Whittle While You Work
For Boomer kids, pocket knives were essentials. By second grade, every young boy had one. And they weren’t toys. They were real knives. My first one of many (I lost them on a regular basis) was a barlow. Afterall, Huckleberry Finn had one, and so did I. When things were slow, with no pretend army or navy battles underway, we broke out our barlows and whittled. Mostly we whittled small sticks … [Read more...]
A New Club in My Bag
I took out my 3 wood and put a new stick in my golf bag. It’s not a golf club, though. It’s a golf ball retriever by Callaway. I decided to order one after a near-death experience at Greene Hills. We were on Hole 13, a long (for me) Par 3. I needed all the help I could get, so I pulled out my last new Chrome Soft golf ball that my son Jimmie had given me for Christmas. Then I proceeded to … [Read more...]
Riverside North
You eat well throughout the week, counting calories, nibbling on celery sticks and helpings of kale, and then you say – to hell with this – I want real food. That’s when Nancy and I get in the car and head for Riverside North. We order greasy cheeseburgers, onions rings and a basket full of French Fries. Next week, we’ll diet, but for now, we’re eating food as God intended. That happened to us … [Read more...]
Birds of A Feather
Our bird feeder filled with sunflower hears has been busier than the Kohrs Ice Cream Store on a “Nickel A Cone Day.” Birds of all shapes and sizes have been lined up, ready for their turn at the seeds. That’s because many of them have babies and the one seed baby birds can all eat and digest is a sunflower heart. Sunflower hearts as commercial bird seed are a fairly recent development, … [Read more...]
Unique Services
I went to Kroger’s last Sunday morning at 7:30 am, needing some bacon, pancake mix and melons for a Mother’s Day Breakfast I was preparing for Nancy. Even at that early hour, when I pulled in the parking lot, there were several men out picking up trash and litter. They were the maintenance employees of one of the great local Cville businesses – Unique Services, owned and operated by Lawrence … [Read more...]
