When you give a few bucks to one of those fellows standing on the corner with a cardboard sign, you never really know whether you’ve helped in some small way or just enabled an addict. But when you put money in one of those Red Kettles of the Salvation Army, you can be assured your contributions are productive.
The Salvation Army was established in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth in London, tracing its origins to the Blind Beggar tavern. The Salvation Army provides for both physical and spiritual needs. They freely give food, clothing and shelter to anyone who asks. The Salvation Army helps thousands and thousands of lost souls get back on track to a productive life.
Plus, out of every dollar you give, 82 cents goes directly for services, far higher than any other charity. The top executive at the Salvation Army, Todd Bassett, receives a salary of just $18,000 per year, plus a housing allowance. It is a worthy organization and in need of your help, so they can help others.
Early this year, I decided to save the dollars I may have given to those on the street corners and to be extra generous each time I pass by a volunteer with the Salvation Army, cheerfully ringing bells.
I believe this is the best way of really contributing to those in need.
