Reid’s made a serious effort at saving their business as creditors closed in, and they really succeeded by mostly refilling the shelves against great odds. But ultimately, the value of their real estate on Preston Avenue was too great to ignore, and they sold their land to Twice as Nice, a used clothing boutique.
I think Reid’s had the best chicken and the best pork in town. Don’t know their suppliers, but their chicken was not dripping with fat like you find with Tyson’s and Purdue. It was tender and delicious – pork too. I especially like their cubed pork steaks.
Their closure leaves a giant hole for a grocery store in that part of town. The nearest grocery store is now a couple miles away. In fact, does the City of Charlottesville even have a grocery store? They have plenty of restaurants and boutiques, that’s for sure. Too bad, but I wish the owners well. They were a great Charlottesville neighbor for over 50 years.
