For the first time since March, I felt a genuine sense of normalcy. I sat out in the back yard on a Saturday afternoon and listened to a UVA football game on the radio. I puffed on a cigar and sipped a cold beer while the Cavaliers alternated between great and awful. It was just like old times.
Even though Scott Stadium sat mostly empty, the players of both Duke and Virginia played their hearts out. But I wonder – if 200 people can go inside a Lowe’s store, why couldn’t several thousand safely go to an open air football stadium if everyone wore a mask and maintained a reasonable distance?
Some stadiums are now admitting 5,000, so we’re making a little progress. The old normal may be just on the horizon.
When the game was in the final seconds and UVA had secured the win, I went inside and turned on the TV. I checked my new Hulu hook-up and the game was on there. I could have seen the entire thing on TV. Still, I enjoy sitting outside on a lovely fall afternoon and listening to the game. It’s my old normal and it was good to be back.
