Dick’s Sporting Goods is on my S… List (S stands for sad). I had a rough experience on my last visit. I was picking up a few Christmas gifts and saw some interesting things in the Sales Bin in their fishing department. In the Sales Bin, they always have some interesting, discounted items that make good stocking stuffers for some of the fishermen in my clan. I picked up a few of bags of worms and saw a spinner bait that I liked. It was the last one in a bin marked $4.99. So, I put it in my cart. When I came to the check-out line, there was a young man pre-scanning all the items in the carts with a hand-held scanner. He said it was to help speed up the checkout process. When he came to my special spinner bait, it didn’t record, so he hit the bar code numbers and I asked how much his scanner said. He said $10, which was likely the original price. I said, “No thanks. I bought it only because it was on special.”
When I got to the final check-out line, they gave me a grand total of my purchases, not an item-by-item account. That came only after you had paid and got your final receipt. The only thing on the register was the code number. I told them I didn’t trust them and wanted to know what each item actually cost. So they went through the cart, item by item.
Often in stores, somebody forgets or does not coordinate reductions with the computer. If I had not checked, I would have paid $10 for a lure that was marked $4.99.
I guess it’s good way for Dick’s to make a little extra on their bottom line.
